  • It is basically based on echo reply mechanism to find the reach-ability of the destination For Exp:- Ping Command and Trace route command.
  • ICMP is a limited error control protocol because it only reports the error to the sender but does not correct them.
  • It does not generate the error message for the ICMP message which is lost. It does not notify the error for special addresses like multicast address, broadcast address and loop back address.
