Network Topology:-Part2

3. Ring Topology:-

  • Ring topology has dedicated Point to Point connections with two neighbouring devices.
  • The transmission is unidirectional and each device has repeater so, the signals are regenerated. Hence, ring topology can be used for long distance communication.
  • With the help of token system there is a token management which provides traffic and control management. Hence, Congestion is avoided.

  • Single Ring is not robust but with the help of dual ring structure robustness is provided along with traffic sharing. In primary ring the traffic travels in clockwise direction where as in secondry ring the traffic travels in anticlockwise direction.

4. Star Topology:-

  • A star is not a dedicated but Point to Point topology because each device is connected to each other through central controller known as ‘HUB’.
  • The HUB operates on broadcast mode. Hence, not secure and it has limited input and output port so, star is preferred for small networks like ethernet LAN.
  • It is not robust because if HUB fail entire network will fail.
  • The number of wires is less and it is easy to detect faults. Hence, it is not complex so, fault rectification is also easy.
